Bee swarm in Bradford? Help is a minute away.

Bradford is a former worsted-wool city in the Pennine foothills of West Yorkshire, with Ilkley Moor, Rombalds Moor and the Wharfe valley immediately to the north and the Bronte country of the Haworth moors to the west. The Bradford BKA is one of the most active in the county, and the surrounding landscape — the heather and bilberry moorland of the Ilkley and Baildon moors, the Aire and Wharfe riverside willows and watermeadow margins, the old parkland of Lister Park and the mixed farmland of the Wharfe fringe — gives local bees access to genuine Pennine heather forage in late summer.

Where swarms appear in Bradford

Typical swarm locations

Collectors regularly attend swarms in the older garden remnants and lime trees of the Little Germany and Manningham conservation areas, on the heather and bilberry moorland margins of Baildon Moor and Rombalds Moor above Ilkley, along the Aire and Bradford Beck riverside willows at Saltaire and Hirst Wood, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older Victorian wool-city properties.

Forage in West Yorkshire

The lower valleys of the Aire, Calder and Wharfe open with sycamore and wild cherry in April, before the hawthorn and hill meadows of the Pennine fringe come in. Bramble carries the middle of the season, supported by rosebay willowherb on the post-industrial brownfield — a strong northern flow. The signature crop is heather: bell from late July and ling through August on Ilkley Moor, Baildon, Ovenden, Rishworth and Denholme commons, giving the thick, ambercast heather honey that remains a point of local pride.
