Bee swarm in Much Wenlock? Help is a minute away.

Much Wenlock is a small market town on the Wenlock Edge limestone ridge in central Shropshire, with the ruins of Wenlock Priory at its heart and the dramatic escarpment of Wenlock Edge stretching south-west for fifteen miles. The Shropshire BKA covers the town, and the surrounding landscape — the ancient ash woodland and limestone grassland of Wenlock Edge, the old orchards and hedged pasture of the Hope Dale and Corvedale fringe, the Severn valley meadows to the north and the coal-measure country of the Coalbrookdale fringe — makes Much Wenlock one of the most scenically and botanically rich bee locations in the county.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors regularly attend swarms in the older garden and walled plot remnants of the High Street and Sheinton Street conservation areas, on the limestone grassland and ancient ash-scrub margins of Wenlock Edge and Blakeway Hollow, along the Severn riverside willows towards Buildwas, and in the chimney stacks and stone eaves of the older medieval and Georgian town-centre properties.

Forage in Shropshire

Early sycamore and hawthorn open on the Severn Valley; oilseed rape is common on the North Shropshire plain. Lime at Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Oswestry gives a strong June flow. Bramble is dense; the mosses of Whixall, Fenn and Bettisfield contribute a patchy but distinctive late summer flow of bog rosemary and cross-leaved heath. The Long Mynd, Stiperstones and Clee Hills provide bilberry and late ling heather — still migrated to by Shropshire beekeepers in August. Ivy on the old red-brick farms and timber-framed cottages closes the year.
