Knaresborough is a historic market town on the River Nidd, cut into a dramatic limestone gorge six miles east of Harrogate. The medieval castle, the viaduct, the market place and Mother Shipton's Cave attract visitors year-round, but it is the Nidd gorge woodland — ash, wych elm and sycamore on the limestone cliffs — the hay meadows and elder scrub of the Bilton fields, and the long mixed-farmland corridor into the Vale of York that give Knaresborough's bees one of the most varied forage landscapes in the county. The area is served by the Harrogate and district beekeeping community.
Collectors attend swarms on the limestone gorge cliff-top gardens and wych elm scrub above the Nidd, in the old orchard remnants and lime trees of the market place and High Street conservation area, along the Nidd watermeadow willows and riverside walks at Grimbald Crag and Conyngham Hall, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the sandstone-built Victorian and Georgian town-centre properties.

The Vale opens on oilseed rape, hawthorn and sycamore; the Dales add hedgerow bramble and lime around Ripon, Harrogate and Skipton; but North Yorkshire is defined by its heather. The North York Moors and the eastern Dales give long, reliable ling flows from late July into September — still commercially worked, still producing some of the finest heather honey in the UK. Bilberry on high pasture adds a quiet early-summer supplement, and rosebay willowherb flushes every managed forestry clearing.
