Filey is a seaside resort on the Yorkshire coast between Scarborough and Bridlington, sheltered by Filey Brigg and flanked by the chalk cliffs of Bempton and the sandy crescent of Filey Bay. The Scarborough BKA covers the town, and the coastal landscape around it — the chalk cliff-top grassland and thrift along the Brigg, the gorse and blackthorn of the Cleveland Way above Hunmanby Gap, the allotment gardens and Edwardian park beds of the town, and the hedgerow hawthorn and field maple of the Carr Naze and Primrose Valley hinterland — gives local bees a distinctive coastal Yorkshire season.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the Edwardian terrace eaves and chimney pots of Rutland Street and The Crescent, in the sea-buckthorn and gorse scrub of the cliff-top path at Carr Naze and Filey Brigg, in the flowering garden borders of the Edwardian villas around Belle Vue Street, and in the orchard gardens and hedgerow hawthorn at Hunmanby and Muston on the inland margins.

The Vale opens on oilseed rape, hawthorn and sycamore; the Dales add hedgerow bramble and lime around Ripon, Harrogate and Skipton; but North Yorkshire is defined by its heather. The North York Moors and the eastern Dales give long, reliable ling flows from late July into September — still commercially worked, still producing some of the finest heather honey in the UK. Bilberry on high pasture adds a quiet early-summer supplement, and rosebay willowherb flushes every managed forestry clearing.
