Newport · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Ringland? Help is a minute away.

Ringland is a substantial residential area of north Newport, built on a hillside above the Usk valley with views across to the ancient oaks of Wentwood. The Gwent BKA covers this area, and the surrounding countryside gives local bees productive access to a range of habitats: Tredegar Park and the Usk valley woodland below Ringland give the early hawthorn and sycamore flow, with lime and horse chestnut in the parkland avenues contributing June forage; the upland woodland of Wentwood to the east adds sweet chestnut and field maple. Bramble is dense on the hillside scrub edges and the old hedgerows of the urban fringe; the Usk riverside willows and watermeadow complete the season. Ivy on the older redbrick walls closes the year.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors regularly attend swarms in the mature garden trees and scrub hedges of the Ringland residential streets, in the parkland and walled-garden remnants of Tredegar Park below Ringland, along the Usk riverside willows and watermeadow margins between Llangybi and the city bridge, on the hillside bramble and scrub margins of the old field hedgerows on the urban fringe, and in the eaves of the older semi-detached properties.

Forage in Newport

The Gwent Levels carry a distinctive damp-meadow forage — purple loosestrife, hemp agrimony, meadowsweet — and white clover on the grazed marsh. Wentwood provides a classic ancient woodland flow of sycamore, field maple, lime and sweet chestnut. The city's Belle Vue Park and the banks of the Usk offer urban lime. Bramble is universal; rosebay willowherb flushes former industrial land. Coastal sea-lavender at Peterstone Wentlooge adds seasoning, and ivy on the old red-brick terraces closes the year.
