Newport · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Marshfield? Help is a minute away.

Marshfield is a village on the Gwent Levels, south-west of Newport in the flat reclaimed wetland landscape between the M4 and the Severn estuary. The Levels landscape — divided by reens (drainage ditches) filled with marsh forage of purple loosestrife, hemp agrimony, water mint and yellow flag — is one of the most distinctive bee habitats in Wales, quite unlike the surrounding upland pasture. White clover on the grazing marsh and sea-lavender on the coastal strip complete the season. The Gwent BKA serves the area.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors attend swarms in the old orchard and hedgerow remnants of the village, along the reen margins and damp meadow of the Gwent Levels around Marshfield Moor, in the garden trees of the older farmhouses and cottages, and in the eaves and roof spaces of period farm buildings and village houses.

Forage in Newport

The Gwent Levels carry a distinctive damp-meadow forage — purple loosestrife, hemp agrimony, meadowsweet — and white clover on the grazed marsh. Wentwood provides a classic ancient woodland flow of sycamore, field maple, lime and sweet chestnut. The city's Belle Vue Park and the banks of the Usk offer urban lime. Bramble is universal; rosebay willowherb flushes former industrial land. Coastal sea-lavender at Peterstone Wentlooge adds seasoning, and ivy on the old red-brick terraces closes the year.
