Newport · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Malpas? Help is a minute away.

Malpas is a northern suburb of Newport, set on higher ground above the Usk valley with the Allt-yr-yn Nature Reserve immediately to its east — a surprisingly wild patch of broadleaf woodland, scrub and meadow that provides lime, sycamore, hawthorn and bramble forage within the suburban envelope. The Malpas Road corridor has a long history of beekeeping in the allotments and larger gardens of the older housing stock. The ancient Malpas Court farmstead, traces of the medieval settlement, and the Monmouth and Brecon Canal corridor nearby add further habitat diversity. The Gwent Beekeepers' Association covers this area.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors handle swarms in the Allt-yr-yn reserve woodland edge and the meadow margins at its perimeter, in the allotment gardens and older hedged properties along Malpas Road and the Malpas Court environs, and in the outbuildings and roof spaces of the more rural properties on the northern fringe towards Caerleon Road.

Forage in Newport

The Gwent Levels carry a distinctive damp-meadow forage — purple loosestrife, hemp agrimony, meadowsweet — and white clover on the grazed marsh. Wentwood provides a classic ancient woodland flow of sycamore, field maple, lime and sweet chestnut. The city's Belle Vue Park and the banks of the Usk offer urban lime. Bramble is universal; rosebay willowherb flushes former industrial land. Coastal sea-lavender at Peterstone Wentlooge adds seasoning, and ivy on the old red-brick terraces closes the year.
