Bee swarm in Usk? Help is a minute away.

Usk is a quiet market town on the River Usk, ringed by hedgerow pasture and mixed woodland on the old red sandstone soils of the Usk valley floor. The river meadows, the ancient churchyard limes and the Wentwood forest a few kilometres to the south give local bees an excellent and diverse season. Usk is best known for its flower gardens — the castle grounds and the riverside banks are planted with an unusual range of forage plants — and the Gwent Beekeepers' Association is well represented in this part of the valley.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors cover swarms in the lime trees and flower-rich gardens around the town square and castle grounds, along the Usk riverside banks and watermeadows at Usk Rural Life Museum, in the older stone properties on Maryport Street and New Market Street, and in roof voids of the smaller Georgian and Victorian cottages in the town centre.

Forage in Monmouthshire

Blackthorn and hawthorn on red-soil hedges open the year, followed by sycamore and horse chestnut. The Wye Valley woods — Wyndcliff, Tintern, Wentwood — give a lime and sweet-chestnut June crop. Bramble is dense; the Black Mountains edge contributes bilberry and late ling heather. Apple orchards around the Monnow give a minor but useful pollination flow. A strong late ivy flow on red-sandstone stone walls and church towers closes the year.
