Merthyr Tydfil · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Abercanaid? Help is a minute away.

Abercanaid is a village in the Taff Valley immediately south of Merthyr Tydfil, set at the point where the river narrows between the Rhydycar estate and the reclaimed hillsides above the former Abercanaid Colliery. The river corridor carries sycamore, alder and willow through the valley floor; the reclaimed colliery land and slopes above the village are covered in dense bramble and hawthorn scrub. White clover grows on the park and recreation-ground land between the village and Troedyrhiw, and the woodland fringe on the hillside above provides shelter and late-season ivy. The Cardiff, Vale and Valleys BKA and the Brecknock and Radnor BKA both support beekeepers in the upper Taff Valley.

Forage in Merthyr Tydfil

Sycamore is the dominant May flow tree throughout the county borough, most concentrated on the valley sides and along road margins. Reclaimed plateau grasslands carry a strong white clover flow from June; hawthorn and blackthorn scrub is dense at the valley-head field boundaries. The upper slopes above 350 metres carry bilberry and heather on Mynydd Aberdare and the Beacons foothills, supporting a July-to-September upland flow for apiaries at Dowlais and Cefn Coed y Cymmer. Bramble is prolific on all former tip ground, and elder follows every stream corridor through the town. Ivy closes the forage year in October across sheltered valley-side gardens.
