Bee swarm in Woodhall Spa? Help is a minute away.

Woodhall Spa is a Victorian inland spa town on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, set among extensive conifer plantations and lowland heath remnants. The Horncastle BKA is based virtually adjacent to the town. The Kirkby Moor nature reserve east of the town preserves one of the finest remaining lowland heath fragments in the county, offering heather from July to September — a genuine and rare supplement in this part of England. The plantation rides and clearings add bramble, gorse and rosebay willowherb; the wide grass-edged residential streets and Jubilee Park gardens carry white clover and lime; and the surrounding farmland adds oilseed rape in spring.

Where swarms appear in Woodhall Spa

Typical swarm locations

Collectors regularly handle swarms in the mature pine and larch of the old spa quarter's residential gardens along The Broadway and Spa Road, in the veteran trees and ornamental plantings of Jubilee Park, on the heath edge scrub and birch carr at Kirkby Moor, in the veteran hedgerows of the Ostler's Plantation surrounds, and in the chimney stacks and roof voids of the old Edwardian villas.

Forage in Lincolnshire

Oilseed rape is the defining early Lincolnshire flow, enormous in scale across the Fens and Wolds. Field beans, hawthorn and blackthorn carry the hedgerows. Lime and sweet chestnut line the Georgian streets of Lincoln, Stamford and Boston. Bramble is universal, and rosebay willowherb flushes disused airfields and dismantled rail corridors. The Lincolnshire Wolds, though not high, carry sainfoin and chalk grassland herbs. Coastal buckthorn at Gibraltar Point and ivy in the Wolds villages finish a long year.
