Padiham is a small industrial town in the Calder Valley between Burnley and Accrington, its Victorian weaving-shed skyline still largely intact along the riverside. The town is the gateway to the Gawthorpe Hall estate — a Jacobean house now managed by the National Trust — whose walled garden and parkland limes and sycamores provide a sheltered urban forage. The River Calder corridor carries hawthorn, willowherb and meadowsweet through the valley, and the Pennine moorland above Hapton and Padiham Heights gives access to heather from late July.
Local collectors attend swarms in the lime and sycamore trees of Gawthorpe Hall park and the St Leonard's churchyard, in the older chimney stacks and mill building roof voids along the river corridor and Burnley Road, along the hawthorn and elder banks of the River Calder and Sabden Brook footpaths, and in the garden trees and stone-wall crevices of the residential streets above Station Road.

Spring opens on sycamore and hawthorn in the Ribble Valley hedges; oilseed rape is present but secondary. Lime fills June in Preston, Lancaster, Blackburn and Burnley. The Forest of Bowland and the Pennine fringe produce bell and ling heather from late July to early September — a classic Lancashire heather flow, thick and commercially migrated to. Bramble is dense; rosebay willowherb flushes Blackburn and Burnley former-mill brownfield. Ivy on stone-built villages and coastal bungalows closes the year.
