Bee swarm in Morecambe? Help is a minute away.

Morecambe is a north Lancashire seaside resort on Morecambe Bay, its Edwardian promenade and art deco Midland Hotel facing west across one of the largest tidal estuaries in Britain. The salt-marshes and mudflats of the bay, the limestone grassland of the Arnside and Silverdale AONB across the estuary, and the farmland and hedgerow country east of the town give local honey bees an unusual estuarine season — sea lavender on the marsh edge, lime and sycamore in the parks, and a long ivy flow on the limestone walls in autumn.

Typical swarm locations

Local collectors regularly attend swarms in the Edwardian promenade garden hedges and seafront park trees, in the older chimney stacks and rooftop voids of the Victorian terraces behind Marine Road, in the garden lime and cherry trees of the residential streets between the town and Hest Bank, and in the rough coastal scrub and hawthorn on the bay-edge margin near Bolton-le-Sands.

Forage in Lancashire

Spring opens on sycamore and hawthorn in the Ribble Valley hedges; oilseed rape is present but secondary. Lime fills June in Preston, Lancaster, Blackburn and Burnley. The Forest of Bowland and the Pennine fringe produce bell and ling heather from late July to early September — a classic Lancashire heather flow, thick and commercially migrated to. Bramble is dense; rosebay willowherb flushes Blackburn and Burnley former-mill brownfield. Ivy on stone-built villages and coastal bungalows closes the year.
