Bee swarm in Longhill? Help is a minute away.

Longhill is a post-war residential estate in east Hull on the Holderness plain approach, its southern and eastern edges opening directly onto flat arable country. The estate's green-space network carries ornamental cherry, lime and hawthorn planted in the 1970s and 1980s along the playing field boundaries. Beyond the Ring Road, oilseed rape dominates the Holderness plain arable fields toward Hedon and Sproatley, giving a powerful April nectar flow within easy flight of the estate.

Where swarms appear in Longhill

Typical swarm locations

Holderness-plain oilseed rape field margins on the Hedon Road approach beyond the Ring Road produce prime swarms from late April. Longhill Playing Fields hawthorn and ornamental cherry attract clusters through May and June. Estate residential garden boundaries carrying elder and sycamore in Ridgestone Avenue and National Avenue are regular swarm sites. Roof voids and chimney pots of the 1960s-70s housing produce cavity swarms throughout the season.

Forage in Kingston upon Hull

Oilseed rape on the flat Holderness clay plain east and north of the city — visible from Bilton, Bransholme and Longhill — opens the season in April and dominates through early May. Hawthorn and sycamore on the Holderness field-boundary hedgerows follow; within the city, the Avenues — Marlborough, Westbourne, Salisbury and Victoria Avenues — carry one of the finest lime-tree canopies of any English city, producing a dense and fragrant June flow that draws bees from the surrounding streets and parks. Bramble and willowherb flush former industrial land, railway embankments and the Bransholme green-space corridors through summer. The Humber riverside elder and hawthorn scrub at Victoria Dock and the Pier approach adds a late-summer supplement. Ivy on the Old Town walls, churchyards and garden boundaries closes the year.
