Bee swarm in Eastleigh? Help is a minute away.

Eastleigh is a railway-town and borough centre between Southampton and Winchester, with the Itchen Valley Country Park and the chalk stream meadows of the River Itchen forming its eastern boundary. The water meadows carry a superb late-spring and summer flow of white clover, meadowsweet, comfrey and water mint, while the mature suburban parks and lime-tree avenues of the town itself provide a solid foundation through June and July. The Meridian Beekeepers cover much of this stretch of the Itchen valley, with Southampton & District BKA also active nearby.

Where swarms appear in Eastleigh

Typical swarm locations

Collectors regularly attend swarms in the riverside alder and willow corridors of the Itchen Nature Reserve between Eastleigh and Bishopstoke, in the mature garden trees and allotment hedges of the Fleming Park and North Stoneham residential areas, in the Victorian and Edwardian chimney stacks of the older town streets near the railway station, and in the farm buildings and hedgerow oaks of the Colden Common and Chandler's Ford rural fringe.

Forage in Hampshire

The season opens on oilseed rape across the downs north of Winchester, followed by hawthorn, sycamore and field maple in the hedgerow-rich chalk country. Early summer brings the famous lime flow through Romsey, Alresford and the avenues of Southampton Common, with bramble and white clover carrying hives through July. Late summer belongs to the New Forest — ling and bell heather on the open commons give a thick, amber-tending-black crop, and rosebay willowherb flushes every disturbed ride. Ivy on old boundary oaks finishes the year.
