Alton is a market town on the upper Wey, surrounded by the hop-country and chalk downland of north-east Hampshire. Though hops are grown in fewer gardens now than a century ago, the hedgerow-rich farmland around Alton — hawthorn, bramble, white clover, field bean and sycamore in abundance — still supports productive beekeeping. Jane Austen country, as locals will tell you, and a town with a long practical tradition.
Collectors here regularly handle swarms in the garden trees and hop-garden remnants on the Anstey and Borovere Road fringes, in the old chalk-and-flint boundary walls along Normandy Street and the Butts, in the allotments of the Wey valley margin, and in the chimney stacks and roof timbers of the Victorian and Georgian town-centre properties.

The season opens on oilseed rape across the downs north of Winchester, followed by hawthorn, sycamore and field maple in the hedgerow-rich chalk country. Early summer brings the famous lime flow through Romsey, Alresford and the avenues of Southampton Common, with bramble and white clover carrying hives through July. Late summer belongs to the New Forest — ling and bell heather on the open commons give a thick, amber-tending-black crop, and rosebay willowherb flushes every disturbed ride. Ivy on old boundary oaks finishes the year.
