Witham is a historic market town on the River Brain in the Blackwater valley, midway between Chelmsford and Colchester, with a wide agricultural hinterland of arable fields, old orchard rows and hedged Essex farmland. The clay soils here support a heavy oilseed rape flow in April and May across the fields towards Cressing and Terling, followed by hawthorn, white clover and field beans through June. The tidal Blackwater estuary is within easy reach to the south-east, and the Maldon & Dengie 100 BKA covers the area, with Braintree and Chelmsford branches both nearby.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the old orchard and garden trees of the Chipping Hill conservation area and the Witham Lodge grounds, in the hedgerow oaks and field margins along the Brain valley north towards Cressing and White Notley, in the roof spaces and chimney stacks of the Georgian and Victorian properties on the High Street and Newland Street, and in the allotment hedgerows and market-garden boundaries south of the town.

The early season leans hard on oilseed rape across the clay lands of Braintree, Uttlesford and Tendring, followed by hawthorn, maple and horse chestnut in the market towns. Epping and Hatfield Forests contribute a classic woodland flow of lime, sycamore and bramble; white clover is extensive in the pasture margins. Late summer brings rosebay willowherb on reclaimed airfields and motorway verges, and a reliable ivy flow in the coastal villages and old churchyards carries the year to a close.
