Rayleigh is a market town on the London Clay ridge above the Crouch and Roach valleys in south Essex, with a Norman motte, a windmill on the hill and a surprisingly agricultural fringe. Hockley Woods — one of Essex's largest ancient woodlands — lies just to the east, its hornbeam and oak coppice giving local bees a rich woodland flow from April through June. The arable and pasture land of the Crouch valley below the ridge, the garden orchards of the older town fringe and the lime-lined streets of the town centre extend the season from oilseed rape in spring to ivy in autumn.
Rayleigh collectors attend swarms in the hornbeam and oak coppice margins of Hockley Woods and the Rayleigh Hills nature reserve, in the older orchard and garden boundaries on the downhill residential streets towards Eastwood and Hockley, in the churchyard lime and yew of St Michael's and the castle grounds, and in the chimney pots and roof voids of the Victorian and inter-war terraces near the High Street.

The early season leans hard on oilseed rape across the clay lands of Braintree, Uttlesford and Tendring, followed by hawthorn, maple and horse chestnut in the market towns. Epping and Hatfield Forests contribute a classic woodland flow of lime, sycamore and bramble; white clover is extensive in the pasture margins. Late summer brings rosebay willowherb on reclaimed airfields and motorway verges, and a reliable ivy flow in the coastal villages and old churchyards carries the year to a close.
