Halstead is a small wool-trade market town in the upper Colne Valley on the Essex-Suffolk border, its mill buildings and medieval street pattern strung along the River Colne below the Colne Valley viaduct. The boulder-clay farmland of this corner of Essex carries some of the most intact ancient hedgerow networks in the county — dense with hawthorn, field maple, blackthorn and wild cherry — and the riverside alder and willow carr, the meadow planting of the Colne Valley walks and the lime and cherry avenues of the older residential streets give local honey bees an excellent productive season from blackthorn and hawthorn right through to the ivy finish in October.

The early season leans hard on oilseed rape across the clay lands of Braintree, Uttlesford and Tendring, followed by hawthorn, maple and horse chestnut in the market towns. Epping and Hatfield Forests contribute a classic woodland flow of lime, sycamore and bramble; white clover is extensive in the pasture margins. Late summer brings rosebay willowherb on reclaimed airfields and motorway verges, and a reliable ivy flow in the coastal villages and old churchyards carries the year to a close.
