Gatehouse of Fleet is a planned Georgian mill town in the valley of the Water of Fleet, sheltered in the wooded hills of Galloway between Fleet Bay and the Laurieston Forest. The town was founded in the 1760s by James Murray of Broughton as an industrial settlement, and its cotton mills, tanneries and breweries gave way to tourism and farming after the industrial period ended; today its Georgian streetscape of painted houses and the Fleet Valley National Scenic Area around it make it one of the most aesthetically distinctive small towns in south-west Scotland. The Fleet Valley itself is deeply wooded with oak, birch, ash and hazel that extend from the Water of Fleet gorge out to the bay, and the RSPB Carstramon Wood on the valley side is ancient sessile oak woodland of exceptional ecological value. The Galloway Forest Park lies immediately to the north, and apiaries in Gatehouse have access to heather and bilberry flows on the forest margins from late July. Sycamore on the town lane trees provides the May flow; the Fleet valley oak and hazel carry honeydew and pollen supplements through early summer. White clover on the improved farmland between the town and Kirkcudbright is the main June and July source; bramble in the valley woodland and at the field boundaries is dense. Coastal sea-aster on the Fleet Bay saltmarsh adds to the late-summer forage picture; ivy on the older properties closes the year.
Collectors attend swarms in the older Georgian and painted stone properties of the town centre and High Street, along the Water of Fleet alder and oak gorge woodland toward Carstramon, in the RSPB Carstramon Wood and Fleet Valley National Scenic Area ancient woodland margins, in the farm outbuildings of the Fleet valley and bay farmland between the town and Fleet Bay, and on the Galloway Forest Park heather margin above the valley to the north.

The mild Solway climate means spring starts earlier than most of Scotland. Blackthorn and hawthorn open the year; sycamore is important. Oilseed rape is moderate. Lime carries June in Dumfries and Stranraer. Galloway Forest contributes bilberry, rowan and late ling heather; coastal sea-campion on the Solway adds character. Himalayan balsam along the Nith gives a long late flow, and ivy on whitewashed cottage walls closes the year.
