Bee swarm in Dalbeattie? Help is a minute away.

Dalbeattie is a Victorian granite town in the Urr valley between Castle Douglas and the Solway coast — a compact working town that quarried and exported the distinctive silver-grey granite used in London's Embankment, the Mersey Docks and Liverpool's docks. The Urr Water's willows and alder run through the town; the Dalbeattie Forest (Forestry and Land Scotland) immediately behind the town carries bilberry and rowan on its native woodland margins. Hawthorn hedgerows are thick in the Stewartry farm lanes; sycamore lines the older residential streets; and bramble covers the forest road verges. The mild Solway climate extends the active season well into October with a long ivy flow on the stone walls.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors attend swarms along the Urr Water willows through the town, in the Dalbeattie Forest native woodland and bilberry margins, in the hawthorn hedgerows on the Stewartry farm lanes toward Palnackie and Kippford, and in the stone garden walls and granite cottage eaves of the Victorian town streets.

Forage in Dumfries and Galloway

The mild Solway climate means spring starts earlier than most of Scotland. Blackthorn and hawthorn open the year; sycamore is important. Oilseed rape is moderate. Lime carries June in Dumfries and Stranraer. Galloway Forest contributes bilberry, rowan and late ling heather; coastal sea-campion on the Solway adds character. Himalayan balsam along the Nith gives a long late flow, and ivy on whitewashed cottage walls closes the year.
