Sturminster Newton is a small market town on the River Stour in the heart of the Blackmore Vale, an ancient settlement known to Hardy as "the capital of Blackmore" and still the focal point for the surrounding dairy-farming parishes. The Stour here meanders through broad flood meadows of old water-meadow grassland and riverside willows, flanked by the deeply-hedged pastoral lanes of the Vale — one of the most productive bee landscapes in Dorset. The season opens with hawthorn and field maple along the old-enclosure hedgerows, runs through clover-rich hay meadows and bramble in every ditch bank, and closes on ivy along the riverside footpaths and old stone walls. Collectors here attend swarms in the riverside willows and watermeadow margins along the Stour footpath west of the town, in the mature garden and churchyard trees of St Mary and the older town-centre properties on Bridge Street and Church Lane, in the hawthorn and blackthorn hedgerows of the Blackmore Vale farmland south toward Hazelbury Bryan, and in the roof voids and outbuildings of the older stone and brick properties throughout the town.

The chalk downs around Blandford and Shaftesbury bring hawthorn, field maple and a modest oilseed rape flow. The Dorset heath country — Studland, Arne, the Purbeck basin — gives an unusually long heather season (bell heather from late June, then ling) combined with the gorse bloom on the sandy soils. Lime lines the market towns; bramble is dense on the old commons. The late coastal ivy flow on Portland and the cliffs of Lulworth carries hives into autumn.
