Portland is a limestone peninsula — effectively an island, connected to the Dorset mainland only by the Chesil Bank shingle tombolo — of dramatic cliffs, quarries and open grassland jutting into the English Channel south of Weymouth. The Isle of Portland has a uniquely exposed, windswept character, but the thin limestone soils carry a rich chalk-downland-type flora of rock rose, bird's-foot trefoil, wild marjoram, wild thyme and eyebright on the old quarry floors and cliff-top grasslands, and Portland's beekeeping tradition exploits this unusual flow alongside the more typical July bramble season and the autumn ivy on the old stone walls. Weymouth and District Beekeepers serves the island. The Portland Bill coastline and the old quarry commons are among the most characterful bee-foraging landscapes in Dorset.

The chalk downs around Blandford and Shaftesbury bring hawthorn, field maple and a modest oilseed rape flow. The Dorset heath country — Studland, Arne, the Purbeck basin — gives an unusually long heather season (bell heather from late June, then ling) combined with the gorse bloom on the sandy soils. Lime lines the market towns; bramble is dense on the old commons. The late coastal ivy flow on Portland and the cliffs of Lulworth carries hives into autumn.
