Bee swarm in Newton Abbot? Help is a minute away.

Newton Abbot is a market town in the Teign valley, between the granite of Dartmoor to the west and the red-earth farmland of the South Devon coast to the east. The Teign gorge below Chudleigh and the orchard-rich lanes of the Kingsteignton and Kenn valley countryside provide a classic Devon season — sycamore in May, mixed bramble and clover in June and July, and heather from the Dartmoor edge in August. The Newton Abbot BKA covers the whole district.

Where swarms appear in Newton Abbot

Typical swarm locations

Collectors here regularly handle swarms in the orchard boundaries and garden trees of the Highweek and Abbotsbury residential areas, along the river-margin sallow and willowherb of the Teign at Hackney and Aller, on the woodland edge of the Stover Country Park, and in the chimney stacks and slate roofs of the Victorian and Edwardian terrace streets near the town centre.

Forage in Devon

Few UK counties open as quickly. Gorse and blackthorn flowering on the cob hedges of the South Hams can carry colonies into a strong early build-up, followed by the sycamore and lime flows of the river valleys — the Exe, Teign and Dart in particular. Sweet chestnut dots Haldon and the east Devon coast; Dartmoor's bell and ling heather give a classic, thick, ambercast crop into August. On Exmoor, the north-slope bilberry and late ling heather feed smaller, darker crops still prized by local keepers.
