Shirebrook is a former colliery town on the Nottinghamshire border at the northeastern tip of Derbyshire, with the restored wetland and grassland habitats of Shirebrook Country Park and the Pleasley Pit nature reserve providing some of the most diverse post-industrial foraging in the district. The colliery spoil heaps have naturalised into rich wildflower meadows carrying bird's foot trefoil, red clover and knapweed through summer; hawthorn and blackthorn line the old railway paths; and the Sherwood Pines forest edge to the east provides heather in August. Swarms in Shirebrook are reported from the gardens of the Edwardian colliery terraces near the market place, from the hawthorn and elder scrub along the old railway cutting between Shirebrook and Pleasley, from the woodland edge at Shirebrook Country Park, and in the roof voids of the older brick properties near the station.

Spring opens on blackthorn and hawthorn in the dales, with sycamore and field maple on the valley slopes. Oilseed rape is common in south Derbyshire. The signature flow is high-moorland ling and bell heather across Bleaklow, Kinder Scout, Stanage and Big Moor — thick, amber-cast, and still commercially migrated to. The White Peak adds limestone grassland herbs — wild thyme, knapweed, marjoram — and bilberry grows on the moorland margins. Rosebay willowherb flushes every disused quarry, and ivy closes the year on stone-walled farms.
