Poyntzpass is a small village in south-east County Armagh, set in the lowland drumlin country between Newry and Portadown. The village sits on a gap in the drumlins historically used as a route north from Newry, and the surrounding farmland is typical of this well-watered lowland area: hawthorn-hedged fields, white clover pasture and damp meadow along the stream corridors. Apple orchards are within easy reach to the north-west toward the Armagh fruit belt. The Newry Canal passes a short distance to the west, its towpath carrying willow and alder. Collectors cover swarms in the hawthorn and whitethorn hedges on the drumlin farm lanes around the village, along the willow and alder margins of the stream corridors south of the village, in the walled gardens and orchard trees on the village outskirts, and in the eaves and outbuildings of the older farmsteads.

Apple blossom in the Loughgall, Portadown and Richhill orchards gives one of the most concentrated early pollination flows in the British Isles. Hawthorn and sycamore follow.
