County Armagh · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Crossmaglen? Help is a minute away.

Crossmaglen — known locally as Cross — is the principal market town of South Armagh, set close to the Irish border in a rolling drumlin landscape shaped by centuries of small-farm agriculture. The Creggan River drains the hill slopes to the north, and dense whitethorn hedgerows line almost every field boundary. Slieve Gullion, the volcanic centrepiece of the Ring of Gullion AONB, dominates the skyline to the north-east; late ling heather and bilberry on its slopes provide an August-season resource within easy flight of town apiaries. Gorse scrub on the upland margins flowers generously in spring and again in autumn. Sycamore, ivy on stone walls and scattered farm orchards complete a varied forage calendar.

Forage in County Armagh

Apple blossom in the Loughgall, Portadown and Richhill orchards gives one of the most concentrated early pollination flows in the British Isles. Hawthorn and sycamore follow. Lime lines the Georgian streets of Armagh city. Bramble is dense on the small-field landscape; clover still matters on pasture. The Ring of Gullion and the Sperrins edge contribute bilberry and late ling heather. Ivy on whitewashed cottage walls closes a long, hedge-rich season.
