Bee swarm in Llandudno? Help is a minute away.

Llandudno is north Wales's foremost Victorian seaside resort, built on the isthmus between the Great Orme and the Little Orme with a famous pier and two beaches. The Great Orme headland — a Site of Special Scientific Interest and country park — is one of the most botanically rich limestone promontories in Wales, supporting wild thyme, rock-rose, bloody cranesbill, hoary rock-rose, and early-purple orchid on its ancient limestone grassland, alongside gorse scrub and the remnant parkland of the old Marine Drive. The lime trees of the Victorian promenades and Happy Valley give a classic June town flow, and the Orme's sheltered south-facing slopes extend the bee season well into October.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors handle swarms on the limestone grassland and gorse scrub of the Great Orme, in the lime and ornamental trees of the promenade and town-centre parks, in the walled gardens and conservatory-topped Victorian villas of the residential streets, and in the eaves, chimneys, and cavity walls of the older seafront hotels and residential properties throughout the town.

Forage in Conwy

Hawthorn and blackthorn fill the old enclosure hedges of the Conwy valley and the coastal plain. Sycamore is abundant on every sheltered valley slope and lane. The defining late-summer flow comes from ling heather on the Mynydd Hiraethog, Tal-y-Fan, and Bwlch-y-Ddeufaen moorlands — still worked commercially by some beekeepers who migrate hives from the coast in August. Lime lines the Victorian promenades of Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, and Abergele through June. Bramble is prolific along disused railway trackbeds, forestry margins, and the Conwy valley flood-plain hedgerows. Gorse provides an early-spring supplement on the upland commons above Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan.
