Gilmerton is a former mining village on Edinburgh's southern edge — now a suburban district but still retaining a distinct character, with the historic Gilmerton Cove cave system beneath its streets and the farmland of the Midlothian boundary at its back. The Burdiehouse Burn provides a green corridor from the suburb to the open fields, with hawthorn and elder hedging, rough grassland and bramble scrub that bees follow out from the garden terraces each spring. The Craigmillar Castle grounds, managed as open parkland, and the Edmonstone estate woodland contribute a genuine semi-rural forage margin to the east.
Collectors attend swarms in the Burdiehouse Burn hedge and scrub margins, in the Craigmillar Castle parkland trees, in the garden walls and eaves of the inter-war and post-war terraces of Moredun and Gilmerton proper, and along the farmland hedgerow edges at the boundary of the city with Midlothian.

Spring comes later than southern England but catches up quickly on horse chestnut and sycamore in the Meadows, Inverleith Park and Holyrood. The lime avenues of the New Town produce a classic pale, mineral June flow; Blackford Hill, Arthur's Seat and the Pentlands add gorse and broom. Bramble and rosebay willowherb are heavy on every disused railway and quarry corridor. Coastal sea-aster and sea-pink on the Forth shore at Cramond, and a strong ivy flow on Old Town walls, close a surprisingly long urban season.
