Knutsford is a prosperous market town at the heart of the Cheshire plain, the "Cranford" of Mrs Gaskell and gateway to the Tatton Park estate — one of the finest deer parks and gardens in the north-west. Tatton's veteran oaks, limes and the formal gardens with their walled kitchen garden and maze provide exceptional forage, supplemented by the hawthorn hedgerows of the surrounding dairy farmland, the gorse and bilberry of Lindow Moss on the town's south-western edge, and the lime avenues of the town's Victorian villa streets.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the mature trees and garden borders of Tatton Park and its ornamental gardens, along the gorse and scrub margins of Lindow Common and Lindow Moss, in the old walled garden and orchard remnants of the King Street and Legh Road Victorian villa strip, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older brick and sandstone properties around the town centre conservation area.

Oilseed rape is heavy on the lighter soils of Mid Cheshire; hawthorn, sycamore and willow line the field margins. The mosses — Delamere, Holcroft, Risley — contribute a patchy but useful late crop with bog-myrtle and cross-leaved heath. Lime lights the streets of Chester, Nantwich, Crewe and Knutsford. Bramble is dense along every canal corridor, and a small hill heather supplement comes from the Peckforton and Bickerton ridge. Cheshire's pastoral landscape means white clover is still an honest flow, and ivy closes the year on half-timbered village walls.
