Pontyates is a compact mining-heritage village in the lower Gwendraeth valley between Kidwelly and Cross Hands, set where the Gwendraeth Fach river and the older anthracite workings shaped a dense pattern of colliery terraces and chapel-going communities across the valley floor. The village is part of the Gwendraeth valley community that includes neighbouring Pont-iets, and its residential character today mixes older stone and brick terraces with postwar housing on the gentle hillsides above the river. The Gwendraeth valley floor carries white clover and meadow grasses on its improved pastures through June and July; hawthorn and blackthorn on the field boundaries on either side of the valley add to the spring blossom. Sycamore on the village lane trees and in the old chapel grounds provides the May flow; the reclaimed colliery land and scrub at the south end of the village has developed into bramble-rich habitat that extends the summer season. The Mynydd y Gwair and Mynydd Sylen limestone uplands to the north give a distinctive flowering-plant character to the valley edge, and ivy on the older properties closes the year through October.

Blackthorn and hawthorn in the Tywi and Teifi valleys open the year. Sycamore is everywhere; white clover in the hay meadows still matters. Lime in Carmarthen, Llanelli, Llandeilo and Ammanford gives a strong June flow. The Black Mountain contributes bell and ling heather in August. Bilberry on the Brechfa oakwoods supplements; bramble is dense; ivy on whitewashed farmhouses closes a long dairy-country season.
