Penylan is a well-established residential suburb east of Cardiff city centre, its Victorian and Edwardian houses, mature garden trees and the Roath Park lake and recreation ground boundary making it one of the more characterful inner suburbs of the Welsh capital. The Roath Park pleasure gardens carry an outstanding collection of mature limes, horse chestnuts and ornamental flowering trees giving an exceptional June flow. The stream feeding the Roath Park lake runs through the district with its alder, willow and bramble margins, and the wide private gardens of the larger Edwardian houses carry a long diverse flower season.
Collectors attend swarms in the mature lime and horse chestnut avenues at the Roath Park lakeside and pleasure garden borders, on the garden walls and chimney pots of the Victorian and Edwardian properties along Ty Draw Road and Kimberley Road, along the stream corridor below Waterloo Gardens, in the mature hedge gardens of the larger houses on Ninian Road and Heathfield Road, and on the allotments near Pen-y-Lan Road.

Early flows come from cherry plum and blackthorn in Bute and Roath parks. Sycamore and horse chestnut fill May; the lime collection in Bute Park is one of the largest in any UK city, giving a classic pale urban lime honey in June. Bramble is dense along the Taff Trail; rosebay willowherb flushes the former dock brownfield of Cardiff Bay. Coastal sea-lavender and samphire at Rhymney Great Wharf add a distinctive saline note; ivy on Victorian terraces closes the year.
