Bee swarm in Branksome? Help is a minute away.

Branksome is a suburban district between Poole and Bournemouth, its character shaped by Branksome Chine running down through pine woodland to the cliff and the large wooded garden plots of Branksome Park. Pine woodland, coastal garden sycamore and mature specimen trees in the substantial detached properties of Branksome Park make this one of the more productive urban-fringe bee habitats in the BCP area. The clifftop rhododendron shrubberies and pine canopy give shelter and forage across a long season.

Where swarms appear in Branksome

Typical swarm locations

Branksome Chine pine woodland and coastal elder on the cliff-path are common swarm gathering sites in May. The large tree-garden plots and rhododendron shrubberies of Branksome Park attract prime swarms in the mature sycamore and lime canopy. Residential sycamore and lime on Western Road and Pinewood Road produce swarms in June. Chimney stacks and roof cavities of the Edwardian villas approaching Lilliput and Canford Cliffs are regular cavity swarm sites.

Forage in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

The season opens on gorse at Turbary Common and Canford Heath from February; blackthorn in the chine hedgerows follows. Lime in Bournemouth's public gardens — the Central, Upper and Lower Gardens along the Bourne chine — delivers a fine late-June flow. The Hengistbury Head headland and Stanpit Marsh carry sea-lavender, sea-aster and coastal scrub into August. Bramble is dense in the chines and on the heath edges. Bell heather and ling on Canford Heath and Turbary Common give a late-July to September supplement that few coastal UA areas in southern England can match. Coastal ivy on cliff-face gardens and older bungalow walls closes the year.
